Officers have received several complaints this weekend re anti-social behaviour in Bakewell. We have had reports of youths entering a derelict building in the Bakewell area on several occasions throughout Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon / early evening, being loud and using some 'colourful language'. This is disturbing for elderly residents living nearby but also very concerning due to the structure of the building being questionable. Parents, to avoid any serious injuries please have a discussion with your kids re the dangers of going in derelict buildings. The risks are often hidden and unpredictable, even if the building looks quiet or stable from the outside. 1. Structural Dangers Unstable floors, roof and stairs may collapse without warning due to rot, corrosion, fire damage, or long-term neglect. Loose masonry, ceilings, or glass can fall and cause serious injury. Hidden holes or weakened supports may be concealed by debris or darkness. 2. Health Hazards Asbestos (common in older buildings) can be released if materials are disturbed, causing long‑term lung disease. Mould, damp, and fungi can trigger respiratory problems or infections. Chemical residues (fuel, solvents, pesticides) may still be present and toxic. Accumulated bird or rodent droppings can carry diseases such as leptospirosis or histoplasmosis. 3. Fire and Environmental Risks Derelict buildings may contain flammable materials and exposed wiring. Poor ventilation can lead to oxygen-deficient spaces or a build-up of noxious gases. Flooded basements or damp conditions increase the risk of slips and electrocution. 4. Physical Injury Risks Sharp objects, broken glass, exposed nails, or metal can cause deep cuts. Debris may conceal needles or hazardous waste. Lack of lighting increases the risk of trips and falls. 5. Personal Safety Risks Buildings may be used by rough sleepers, drug users, or individuals involved in criminal activity, creating unpredictable confrontations. Aggressive dogs or vermin may be present. Patrols will be carried out in the area to assist in keeping our young people safe and inappropriate behaviour will be dealt with accordingly.
